Today, we will introduce San’in Kaigan Global Geopark and Kitamae-bune as the place of nature and culture for Hyogo. We picked up Genbu cave, Genbudo museum, Hasakari-rock, Dian Gate, Imagoura, Okami-park, and Kannabe Plateau for San’in Kaigan Global Geopark and Takeno coast and some ports for Kitamae-bune. In addition, we would like to introduce Amarube railway bridge which is famous as a perfectly clear elevator and lauding snow crab and its auction.
By the eruption 1.6million years ago, the magma got cold, broke to beautiful hexagon, and formed columnar joint. You can see the movement of thermal convection when the magma gets cold. Genbu cave is originated by a confucian scholar in Edo period, Shibano Kuriyama. He associated the cave as a Chinese beast 「Genbu,」also the Genbu cave is basalt which called Genbu-rock in Japanese. Genbu cave is globally important place because it is not by nature, but by quarry. The cut rock from the Genbu was useful for pickle stone, the foundation of the house, and stone wall. There are 「Genbu cave,」「Seiryu cave,」「Byakko cave,」「Minami-sujaku cave,」and「Kita-sujaku cave」in the park. The Genbu cave and the Seiryu cave are designated as national natural treasures.
The museum is opened march in 2018 around the entrance of the Genbu cave park. On the 1st floor 「Rock zone,」you can see the whole body skeleton of Asia elephant. They also display the history of the Genbu cave and rocks from the San’in Kaigan Global Geopark.
At the 「Kiryu zone,」 they introduce the traditional crafts 「Toyooko Tomoya works.」There are exhibition of gem and mineral at 「Mineral zone」and whole body skeleton of
Tyrannosaurus at the 「Fossil zone」on the 2nd floor.
They have gifts shop, Confectionery factory, restaurant, and café if you would like.
Takeno beach located the center of Takeno coast is elected for 100 beaches in Japan selection and has clear water and white sand beach. The Takeno beach is positioned at the East of the Nekozaki Peninsula and very popular for family. Since Nekozaki Peninsula plays a role as a natural breakwater for Kitamae-bune, the beach became a port of call for Kitamae-bune. Takeno Chamber of Commerce and Industry Youth Department made up the large-ema which is put at the Takeno beach. You can view the Nekozaki Peninsula, Takeno beach, and Japan Sea from the Jayayama-park.
This is the place where you can see the data about Kitamae-bune and hot spring facility. At the Kitamae-bune data room on 2nd floor, they exhibit 1 out of 5sized model ship of 「Tenjinnmaru,」ship note, shipboard, magnet, telescope, ship-ema. You can enjoy restaurand and gift shops as well.
The Takeno coast called 「Large beach of Takeno」from the Edo era to Meiji was prospered. There are still some traces from the age.
Large lantern is made from local blue stone that of height is 5m. People lived in Takeno region donated for the lantern. At the Takano-shrine, there is a ship-ema from the time and direction stone in the precinct. Takeno port did not have any good viewed elevation. Then, they built up an observatory that of height 10m and put a direction stone. The observatory is replaced now, but the direction stone is still saved for its history.
“Hasakari” is the meaning of “getting caught” in Tajima area’s dialect. A round rock with a diameter of 3 to 4 m is caught between two rock pillars standing in the sea. It is designated as a natural treasure in Hyogo prefecture, and it is one of the strange rocks representing Takeno Coast. It is thought that the round rock that is pinched was once the ceiling part of this cave gates. It is a rock that can be formed by volcanic activity, whitish rocks seen in the places are those with granite taken in. Since there is a road park beside the road, you can park your car and observe it.
<Yodo’s Gate of Cave>
It is a gate of about 25 m in width, 15 m in height and 40 m in depth at the tip of the cape north of the Kirihama Coast. The waves eroded the cracks of the granitic and granite rock layers and the faults cutting them. You can see the gate gently with a geo canoe tour. There is a legend that “Susanoo” came and got rid of the demon group whose head is the “King of the Yodo” who opened a hole with a golden bar and made a bad thing here.
Imagoura is a quiet cove and once flourished as a port of call for Kitamae-Ship. Now it is popular as an island playground, beach, campground. The rocky place where you can play in the island is called “Senjojiki”, it is one of the highlights of the San’in Coast Geopark with wave-shaped shelf of tuff which was scraped by the wave. There is a strange rock in the shape of a frog off the coast, known as “frog island”. The andesitic rock was eroded and it became such a form. Long ago, it is said that the men who went on a voyage on Kitamae ship pray for safe return. There is a cape that stands out of the cliffs “Nose of Ohbiki” where we have advanced about 5 minutes north of the promenade at the Imagoura beach. From the unobstructed observation deck you can see the Kasumi coast and the Japan sea. The setting sun setting in the Japan sea is certified as “top 100 sunsets in Japan”.
It is a park located at the tip of the cape of Shiroyama Peninsula at Kasumi Coast, famous as a viewing spot. From the viewing square with pine trees growing big stone lanterns you can see the Kasumi coast. There is a tradition that Okami Park once was a remote island. It is also known as the cherry tree in spring, the yusuge in the summer, the beautiful sunset spot in the Japan Sea (selected 100 sunset in Japan).
The Amarube bridge was replaced by the present concrete bridge in August 2010. Three bridge piers on the west side of the old bridge are preserved locally. Amarube bridge “Sky station” observation facility completed in May, 2013. Under the bridge there are the monument of opening the “sky station”, pavilion, the free plaza, and so on. In November 2017 an elevator full of glass was completed at the Amarube bridge “Sky station”. Nickname is “Amarube Crystal Tower”. While watching the beautiful sea, it will rise 41 m. Crystal tower is lit up every day with different colors every season. Spring Green, Summer Blue, Autumn Orange, Winter White (In the event such as Rainbow).
Moroyose is Hyogo prefecture’s northern part of the Sea of Japan, a port town closer to Tottori prefecture. The fishing industry is still flourishing today. Moroyose Port as a port of call for Kitae awaiting wind is flourished from the late Edo period to the early period of the Meiji Period. In the town there is a house row that leaves the shadow of prosperity at the time. In 2018, Shin – Onsencho was additionally certified as a Japanese heritage “Kitamae ship port of calling for ships and shipowners’ village.” Constituent cultural properties are eleven places such as the ship ema of “Moroyose” and the main building of Higashifujita family. The calm Moroyose harbor from Shiroyama garden and the setting sun setting in the Sea of Japan are superb. Also, the sea of emerald green with high transparency and the white sandy beach is a popular beach.
The mansion of a ferry wholesaler · Fujita family who made goods at the Kitamae ship. The main building of 130 years was designated as a constituent cultural property of the Japanese heritage “Kitamae ship port of calling and shipowner”. It is renovated to a guest house and a facility that can be used for many purposes.
<Iyonaga Shrine Office>
Ship ema is a shipowner dedicating praying for the safety of navigation. There is five ship ema at Iyonaga Shrine Office. It is one of the constituent cultural properties of the Japanese heritage “Kitamae ship port calling and shipowner village”.
<Shibayama Fishing Port>
Shibayama Port is a natural harbor with coastal lines complicated and fresh seasonal fresh seafood is landing. The winter crab season is crowded with tourists. Matsuba crabs to be landing at Shibayama fishing port is a brand crab called “Shibayama crab”, the top of which is the highest grade crab called “Shibayama GOLD”. When crab fishing is lifted, a bottom tug that caught Shibayama crab enters the harbor. In order to carry the crab to the harbor in a healthy state, the ship is equipped with a tank to keep the water temperature 2 – 3 degrees. It keeps the environment as close as possible to the deep ocean and makes crabs stress free. After landing, it will be screened immediately by women called “Yorite(People who select)”. It is strictly and quickly screened to 110 ranks. Sorted crabs are billed at live conditions. You can visit the bidding field only at the “First Bidding Festival” on the date of ban embargo.
Seven volcanoes have been found in the Kannabe Kogen. Located in the center of the Kannabe Kogen, Mt. Kannabe is the newest volcano in the Kinki district that erupted about 20,000 years ago. The circumference of Mt. Kannabe is a gently rolling hilly area surrounded by 1,000 meters of mountains. You can enjoy a variety of nature-like activities such as skiing, paragliding, glass skiing, mountain biking and hiking all year round. In addition, cultivation of highland vegetables by utilizing the soil scoria sedimented or the climate with great temperature difference, cultivation of rainbow trout using spring water, cultivation of wasabi etc. are carried out. There is a Kannabe Shrine at the summit of Mt. Kannabe. The crater area is ideal for easy hiking. The fall slope of the autumn is full of autumn leaves and Susuki is running in the wind against the mountain.

Mt. Kannabeya at an altitude of 469 m is a scoria hill formed by stacking scoria (sand and gravel that cold and solidified magma that splashed during the eruption). There is a trace of gravel (scoria) taken at the foot of the southeast of the mountain, and you can see the cross section of the red-brown scoria layer.
<Kannabe Valley Park>
A valley park on the north side of the Kannabe Kogen. Two waterfalls are called famous waterfall called Hitsotsudaki and Futatsudaki. (The picture is Hitotsudaki) It is a nature-rich park where you can enjoy the views of the seasons, such as large trees such as Katsura and horse chestnuts, mossy rocks.
<Kannabe Lava Flow>
A large amount of lava flowed out by the eruption of Kannabe flowed down along the Inaba River to the Maruyama River. Due to the lava flow and river erosion, many waterfalls and distinctive districts were created. Some walking trails are also well maintained so you can enjoy walking. The 2nd waterfall was a heavy rain in 2018, a hole was bored in the lower rock, and it came to flow directly to a waterfall.
