The Highlight of Kamikawa Town Part 2

The seventh in the series telling the charm of Kamikawa-cho, Hyogo Prefecture is “The highlight of Kamikawa-cho Part 2”. We will introduce spots such as Plum flower algae and water wheel around Niino Station, Daikoku san, fresh green silver carriageway, “Jubakoishi” (heavy box stone), Tonomine Plateau, and Tonomine Nature Exchange Hall.

<Plum flower algae>

Plum flower algae is a perennial aquatic plant that lives only in the clear stream and blooms small white pretty flowers from May to June. The shape of this flower is similar to that of plum blossoms, so it is said to be “plum flower algae”.
It can be seen in the paddy field near Niino Station and the waterway in Hotel Monte Rosa. The scenery is unique to Kamikawa, where the water is beautiful.

<Niino turbine and red train>

In the Niino area, water mills have been used since about 1693 in the Marshal to fill the rice fields from the waterways. Until the Showa 30s, 18 water turbines were in operation, but in the 1950s, it decreased to 3.
Therefore, the local community revived eight water turbines for the purpose of inheriting traditional culture and revitalizing the region. Eleven water turbines are now active. The idyllic rural landscape with a watermill and a red train on the JR Bantan Line is a popular shooting spot.

<Daikoku God in the Road station “Gin no Bashamichi / Kamikawa”>

On May 14, 2019, Daikoku-sama was installed at the entrance of Yoshitomi station “Gin no Bashamichi / Kamikawa” (Yoshitomi, Kamikawa-cho). When you see Daikoku-sama running on line 312, you will want to stop by the roadside station.

<Jubakoishi (Heavy box stone)>

Along the prefectural road 367, there is a large rock that is stacked in three steps like a heavy box about 50m south of Otoshi Shrine in Sakuhata.
It is a very thankful rock that has been worshiped by people, saying, “If you ask for a secret seal on this heavy box stone, it will never leak out to the world” (from the Ochigawa Meisui Highway Bicycle Down Leaflet).
It is one of the famous spots of “Ochikawa Meisui Highway Bicycle Descent”.

<Tonomine Highland>

Tonomine Plateau has a grassland of Susuki that extends over an area of about 900 meters above sea level and about 90 ha of gentle relief.
Designated as the Yukihiko Mineyama Prefectural Nature Park, such a large Susuki grassland is a valuable grassland both academically and as a natural landscape element (pictured in spring). In order to protect this grassland, “Yamayaki” is held every spring. A green meadow spreads out in summer, silver ears wave in autumn, and a snowy landscape in winter.
It has also become a location for movies such as the “Norwegian Forest”, the Taiga drama “Kiyomori Taira”, and “Military Officers Kanbei Kuroda”.
(Closed in winter due to snow.)

<Tomine Nature Exchange Center>

“The Tonomine Nature Exchange Center has been established as a base for conservation and management of the Tonomine Plateau, and as a base camp for enjoying outdoor activities and nature observation.” (From Kamikawa Tourism Navi)

You can see the plateau from the observation terrace, and you can feel the warmth of the woods.
You can eat handmade soba while looking at the magnificent plateau at the adjacent Heike Soba restaurant “Koryuan”.
